Ministry of Defence was created after independence under the charge of a Cabinet Minister and every Service was placed under its own Commander-in-Chief. In November 1962, the Department of Defence Production was established to deal with development, research and production of defence tools and equipment to the India Army. The Department of Defence Supplies was set-up for execution and planning of schemes for import substitution of defence requirements in November 1965. The Department of Defence Production and Supplies was changed in to the name of Department of Defence Production in year 2004.
Department of Defence deals with many Inter Service Organisations, IDS (Integrated Defence Staff) and three services. The Department of Defence also responsible for the establishment matters, Defence Budget, matters relating to Parliament, defence policy, co-ordination of all defence related activities and defence co-operation with foreign countries.
The Secretary of Department of Ex-Service Welfare, is deals with welfare and pensionary matters of Ex-Servicemen and all resettlement of Ex-Servicemen.
